Forum Disaster Recovery

Post by chibiNekomancer »

Hello

Well, im not sure how many of you have had problems with the forum. Sometimes i can't access it, but after i refresh its ok. That is not reallly a problem, but i am a bit paranoid of what would happen if the forum crashed or something.

In short, is there a backup of the posts and member registration?. There is some really good information that has been posted and it would be sad to loose it.

Of course if making a backup means messing with the settings, that could very well cause a forum crash i would rather not do it.

Also, has the forum ever went offline?

I have noticed the access problem too and I don't exactly know how it happens o_O ? (too many people trying to access at the same time..? o____O)

I really hope there is backups of all the posts and members informations ; if the forum was to crash and if we were to lose all, it would really make me crazy x_____X (I would have liked some backups from the old Mount Merri forum, because there was some great informations there as well ;__ ;)

Too bad at the time I didn't know how to move a forum. Now I do.

Anyways, the problems are due to high use of server and their network problems... the server is at US in a so called "server cluster", basically there are tons and tons of servers close to each other. Even if they try to do their best keeping the uptime high, it really isn't as good as it should be. In the end it is up to the service provider: they are planning to setup new servers at England and Finland, so I probably move to either one (the move should be free) and hopefully that'll fix most of the downtime problems.

There are backups kept by the service provider. Personally I don't take backups. I could do it every now and then.

Um.... i was wondering, what is the database?

Is it mysql?

I know that backingup data in that server type is a bit hard >.<
But since you said they make regular backups iits good, but there no garantie like making one for oneself ;)
