15th anniversary interview translations

Post by deltafour »

With all the I.D. pages done, I'm taking a brief respite from working on Maaya's official site to tackle the various interviews and special features that have come out for Maaya's 15th anniversary and the release of "everywhere". First up is the CDJournal.com serial column: Part 1 is here; you can get to parts 2-5 from the navigation on that page. (CDJournal.com will release Part 6 next week, so I hope to have it up on Thursday.)

I'm going to start working on the other articles (Yorimo, Oricon, Livedoor) in the order they were published. Lastly, I'll also do the interviews and other texts from the concert pamphlet.

Translations from the concert pamphlet

Post by deltafour »

I'm pleased to release unto the intertubes today two translations from the Budōkan concert pamphlet:

* Maaya Sakamoto's Picks - Brief comments on each of the 30 tracks in her best-hits album.

* A Grown-up Theory of Love - A transcript of a conversation between Maaya and CLAMP on romance, boyfriends, and life after 30. I rather enjoyed translating this one, and I hope you enjoy reading it just as much.

Coming next week (EDIT 2010-05-21: when it's done and I'm happy with it -- that'll teach me to set deadlines): the eight-page 15th anniversary interview from the concert pamphlet, and perhaps the Music Magazine special if my copy arrives in the mail.

My vote is for the latter! Lately I've had nothing resembling a life outside of work, and I'd rather use my copious swaths of free time for something useful (or at least something interesting).

Very nice translations! But... "Mr. Iwasato" should be "Ms. Iwasato (Yuuho)".

Fixed, but now I'm wondering where else I might have made the same mistake! Somehow it got stuck in my mind that Iwasato is a guy...weird.

sweeeeet just got the pamphlet and instantly find some translations here. you are the man. dilipops is just jealous :P . oh wait. after so many months... nearly a year i see its not dilipops its dillpops sry :D
holy crap the pamphlet smells so good... not like the towel xD

the first translation is already such an important 1. i was always writing my funny stuff about every song here and now i see her doin it :-O

mameshiba: “I’ll run as far as I have to for the person I love, so call out my name!” man... this sentence depresses me.

ring - 23 karat: wow 23 karat is really close to the purest level.

the day the wind blows: to understand her at least a little i listen to some of the songs she mentiones here while reading. this song is my favorite song of the day. love the feeling when your body dishes out some adrenaline.

loop - sunset side: okay the dude is from.... porno graffifti
okay ill make a porno graffiti now 8==> thats it.

yucca: lol a bug in her room. i wonder if she screamed and ran away or if she was cool. stargazing with maaya ........... lucky bastards.

blind summer fish: "when it comes down to it, underneath that translucent dress is a swimsuit." prove!

30 mins night flaiiight: "I’d be truly happy if you’d listen to the entire album straight through." aye aye captain. /instantly pulls out the album. o.O when i count together the lenght of each track it becomes exactly 30mins. i always thought it would be "around 30" but exactly on the second? neat.

empty your pockets: "people these days probably don’t listen back to my first album…" /raises hand. i do! last time i listend to a song from your first album was 2-3 weeks ago. am i a good boy? give me a reward now :)

a grown up theory of love

whoa maayas parents were at the tokyo international forum?
i wonder if you can see them on the dvd (if i offend maaya with that reference im sry :( )

omg they talk about girlishness. for me maaya isnt a little girl but i mean i made some small childish presents for her lmao my plan blew up in my face. next time alcohol 50%!

okay they started to talk about men lol... about all that models and stuff ><she>>> Sakamoto “No, I haven’t gone that far.” <<< but havent doesnt mean wouldnt!!! she allows 5 years younger WOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

wait.................... uncertainty in the future............ /stagger

ummm the dude needs to like the same food and I SWEAR mid-april i wrote here that i like pizza and what did i read in the pamphlet yesterday? that she likes pizza! thats it. we get married period i won. you can all go home now <.<

what kind of compassionate thing am i doin here?
grade 1 gradual grade 1.

looks like the everywhere video doesnt mean anything serious with "getting married soon".

Sakamoto “Being alone is definitely becoming easier and easier.” for me being alone became easier as well.
it became so easy that changing it became impossible to gauge.
because against the world i have a complaint
that would be? your wounds are just paint
who says that? halleys comet hail-damaged saint

_I still want to fall in love like they do in a Korean drama_

maaya your lying when you say no one asks for you email address.
you get bombs of emails. you have plenty to chose from. plz dont act desperate.

...after reading a bit more it looks like maaya is a person who likes to compete with others. humans are like that. always competing. winning or losing. thats the fast life. as long as humans exist... there will be war :)

i cant believe maaya doesnt got a "the person" to talk about stuff.
if ya want to im always here ya kno <.<

this was really the coolest private stuff i ever read from maaya.
all thx to deltafour the mighty man.

nice pic from clamp

Of course I'm jealous, who wouldn't want to be able to have such high levels of productivity.

Actually have done the penultimate part of the essay now, I miscounted. Thought that part 5 was the second to last, but no, there are seven parts. Thus, I give you the true penultimate part of the essay.

OK, so if you haven't been checking back regularly (uh, probably everyone?), you don't know these have been up for a few weeks now:

Long Interview - From the concert pamphlet, this is the promised interview translation. Not one of my better works, but I'm blaming Maaya for this one -- she rambles way too much when she's talking. :) This one's a little more thorough than the other 15th anniversary interviews, so you might enjoy it.

The Catcher on the Space Road - Also from the concert pamphlet, this is a sort of micro-story by Hiroshi Ichikura, a lyricist and one of Maaya's favorite authors. It's quite short, but I'm rather pleased with how it came out.

These are the final two things from the concert pamphlet that I'm planning on translating, unless there's a great outcry for something else. I didn't see anything in the Music Magazine feature that seemed worth working on at the moment, so I've moved back to the official site.

Hot off the presses right now is a blast from the past: the first six entries to "12 Kind People". This monthly series ran from 2002-2003 and profiled 12 different people Maaya interacted with regularly or otherwise thought highly of. They're old interviews, so don't use them to draw any weird conclusions about how Maaya is today, but they're still quite entertaining. Translated so far are Director Yukako Inoue, Musician Mayumi Sudō, Recording Engineer Masashi Yabuhara, Concert Coordinator Mitsuyuki Saikawa, Stylist Yasuko Inomaru, and Actor Shigenori Yamazaki. The rest will be up when I finish them, so maybe next week.
